IDOT - UP Railroad Over IL 132 Bridge Replacement, Approach Pavement and Temporary Mainline Track Relocation

Gurnee, IL - IL 132

Project Description

This project consisted of Phase II Contract plans, special provisions and quantities were prepared for the replacement structure carrying the UP Railroad over IL 132 and reconstruction of 1/2 mile of IL 132 including the intersection with US 41., and over a mile of temporary & permanent rail improvements. The project provided a replacement of a bridge whose service life had come to pass. Intersection improvements and a great improvement in the vertical curve resulted in a vast improvement in sight distances.

Scope of Work

The interim condition currently has 1 left turn in each direction from US 41 to IL 132, but the ultimate calls for 2 left turn lanes. The ultimate cross section on IL 132 (east leg) will not match the existing IL 132 (west leg) geometric lane configuration, therefore, the west leg will have to be widened to match the ultimate east leg with 12 foot inside thru lanes and 13 foot outside thru lanes for bicycle considerations. The interim east & west legs currently have 10’ thru lanes. The Traffic Signals will be relocated to match ultimate lane configurations. The interim currently has no left turn lanes/ center median in either direction for IL 132 turning onto US 41, but the ultimate calls for 2 WB and 1 EB left turn lane. All islands, traffic signal pole locations and ADA ramps were reconfigured to accommodate add ’l turning lanes and reconfigured turn lanes. Work includes roadway plans, temporary sheet piling arrangement, highway drainage design, erosion control plans, grading plans, typical sections, traffic staging plans, field survey, type, size and location drawing, intersection plans, landscaping plans (drafting only), pavement marking plans, cross sections, and all other work. In addition, a Traffic Management Analysis, and Barrier Warrant Analysis was performed.
