Hazel Crest Village Drive Culvert & Creek Remediation
Hazel Crest, IL
Project Description
The Village of Hazel Crest retained HOH to provide culvert and creek remediation for the box culvert carrying the South Fork of Cherry Creek under Village Drive. The existing box culvert was an 11’ span x 5’ rise, that has severe erosion at both the upstream and downstream ends, especially at the downstream end where there was a 10’ vertical drop from the culvert to the creek bed., wherein the concrete revetment mat which was constructed to bridge the elevation difference had failed.
Scope of Work
HOH selected an energy dissipation structure at the downstream end and large grade rip rap at the upstream end, along with the use of a 60” temporary bypass culvert to allow construction of the cast in place concrete reinforced baffled apron structure for energy dissipation and to mitigate the 10’ elevation drop. The baffled apron measures 15’ in width x 30’ in length, and extends 7’ below creek level with its foundation, and contains 6’ high training walls, with 13 – 3’ w x 2’ high x 1.5’ wide dissipating baffled piers. On Village Drive, the pavement was milled and overlaid, and new guardrail was erected to protect against the creek elevation drop for traffic as well as the pedestrian pathway, and the guardrail was encapsulated with a masonry cover for aesthetics within the limits of the culvert.
